All About Mouthguards with OKC Dentist Dr. Damon R. Johnson, DDS

What would you do if you suddenly lost one or more front teeth? You might have never realized that missing teeth affect eating, speaking, smiling, and self-esteem. OKC dentist Dr. Damon R. Johnson explains that tooth loss from organized sports and recreational activities are common in adults and children. Mouthguards help protect against impact and minimize your risk of broken teeth and facial injuries.

When should I wear a mouthguard?

According to the OKC dentist, mouthguards should be worn any time you participate in impact sports like boxing or non-impact activities (skating, skiing, etc.) that could easily result in facial trauma.

Types of mouthguards

There are three basic types of mouth protectors: custom-made, “boil and bite,” and stock. OKC dentist Dr. Damon R. Johnson reports that custom-made mouthguards are the most expensive but offer the highest level of protection. Boil and bite versions are typically available at sporting goods stores and are molded at home to fit the wearer’s unique mouth. Stock mouthguards are the least effective and are not advised because they are notoriously ill-fitting and can impede one’s ability to breathe.

Protecting your braces

If you have braces or fixed bridgework, a properly fitted mouthguard is an essential piece of equipment. The OKC dentist notes that a blow to the face can cause damage to orthodontic appliances. As well, a mouthguard provides your lips and cheeks protection from being injured by your braces in the event of an accident.

Mouthguard care

OKC dentist Dr. Damon R. Johnson, DDS, recommends replacing a boil and bite mouthguard at least once a quarter or whenever it shows signs of wear. Children through adolescence should have their mouthguards checked for proper fit once a month, as their mouths are still growing and changing. Mouthguards should be washed and rinsed thoroughly before and after each use and never left exposed outdoors.

Bring your mouthguard with you to your next dental checkup; your dentist can help determine if you’re using the right kind of device for your lifestyle.
